バララットーオーストラリア

今回は日本で長年英会話を教え、今はオーストラリア

のバララットに住むこの土地出身のヘザー先生に

聞いてみました。

 

Ballarat, Australia

Ballarat is situated in the state of Victoria, the southern most state of mainland Australia.

It is 105 kilometers northwest of Melbourne.  The population is approximately 100,000.  Ballarat is 441 meters above sea level and is said to have the same climate as Nice in France.

For several years Victoria has been suffering from crippling drought and severe water restrictions.

Ballarat was a very rich city which can be seen in it's heritage, gold was firs discovered here in 1851.  The city is also famous for Australia's only armed civil uprising locally known as Eureka Stockade.  This took place on the 3rd of December 1854.

Like Kyoto, Ballarat is a member of The League of Historical Cities and is this year celebrating its 20 years sister city relationship with Inagawa in Hyogo Prefecture.

　　　　　　　

バララットはオーストラリアの本土の最も南にあるビクトリア州に位置しています。

メルボルンから北西に105ｋｍのところにあります。　人口は約10万人です。

バララットは海抜441mで、フランスのニースと同じ気候だと言われています。

ここ数年ビクトリア州はひどい干ばつと厳しい節水制限に悩まされています。

バララットはその遺産にも見られるように、1851年に金がこの地で初めて発見され、とても豊かな市でした。　地元ではEureka Stockade として知られるオーストラリア唯一の文化武装蜂起でも有名です。これは1854年の12月3日に起こりました。

京都と同様バララットは世界歴史都市連盟のメンバーで、今年兵庫県猪名川町との姉妹都市２０周年を祝っています。
