Hanoi- Vietnam's Cool Capital
Hanoi, though the capital of Vietnam is not the largest city in the country. That honor goes to Ho Chi Minh City in the south. For me- I prefer the ambiance of Hanoi in the north. It has to be one of my favorite cities.
The Old Quarter is a maze of narrow streets that surround Hoan Kiem Lake in the heart of Hanoi. Most of the budget and medium-priced hotels are in this area along with countless handicraft and souvenir shops- great places to pick up lacquerware, ceramics, paintings etc. And of course there are restaurants on every street corner. For a special eating experience check out "Restaurant Bobby Chinn" http://www.bobbychinn.com/en/home.htm by the lake. Serving a mixture of asian and western food it's not to be missed. Another must-visit restaurant is "KOTO." http://www.streetvoices.com.au/koto_hanoi.asp This restaurant provides training for young people who lived on the streets or who come from very poor backgrounds. But it does more than that for them. Check out their homepage to learn about their program. Oh- the food is amazing too!
Directly opposite KOTO restaurant is the "Temple of Literature", Vietnam's first university established in 1070. Other cool places to visit include the "Water Puppet Theatre", sort of like Bunraku in a pool. Lots of museums are scattered around the city. John McCain who might be the next president of the USA was imprisoned in Hoa Lo prison which is now a museum. His plane was shot down over Hanoi while on a bombing mission during the Vietnam War. The "Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex" dedicated to Vietnam's first president, is a spacious area of parks, monuments and museums a few kilometers west of thr Old Quarter. And it's traffic-free! You don't have to worry about getting flattened by Hanoi's crazy drivers.
Getting around the city is no problem as there are lots of taxis, motorbike taxis, and "cyclos", three-wheeled rickshaws that are pedal-powered. Exploring the narrow streets of the Old Quarter on a cyclo is a must!
So there you have it- a cool city with friendly people, great food, and lots to see and do. What more can I say? Go!

ハノイはベトナムの首都ですが、国の一番大きな市ではありません。 その栄誉は南部のホーチミン市にあります。私は北にあるハノイの雰囲気の方が好きです。 私の好きな市の一つです。
Old Quarterはハノイの中心にあるHoan Kiem 湖を囲んで迷路のように入り組んだ細い道となっています。 格安や中級クラスのホテルのほとんどは、漆器や、陶磁器、絵画などを購入できる手芸品店やお土産屋さんとともにこの地域にあります。 そしてもちろん、道のかどにはレストランがあります。 特別な食べ物を経験したいなら、湖畔にある"Restaurant Bobby Chinn" http://www.bobbychinn.com/en/home.htm を試してみてください。 もう一つの絶対お薦めのレストランは "Koto" です。 http://www.streetvoices.com.au/koto_hanoi.asp このレストランはストリートに住んだり、貧しく恵まれない生い立ちにある若者たちを指導しています。 が、それ以上の効果があります。 このプログラムに関するホームページを見てみてください。 あー、そして料理も素晴らしいです。
レストラン"KOTO" の真向かいには、ベトナムで初めて創設された大学の"Temple of Literature"があります。 他の訪問すべきクールな場所にプールの中の文楽のような"Water Puppet Thatre"があります。 市内には多くの博物館が散らばっています。 アメリカの次期大統領候補のJohn McCainは今は博物館になっているHoa Lo 刑務所に収監されていました。 ベトナム戦争時の砲撃任務中にハノイ上空で彼の乗る飛行機が打ち落とされたのです。 ベトナムの初代大統領に捧げられた"Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Complex"は公園、記念碑、博物館などがある広々とした地域でOld Quarterの西数キロの所に位置しています。 そして何よりも歩行者天国です！ ハノイのクレージーなドライバーたちにひかれる心配がありません。
市内をまわるには、タクシー、モータータクシー、ペダルで漕ぐ三輪人力車の"cyclos"がいっぱいいるので問題ありません。 ぜひ、Old Quarterの狭い道をcyclo で探索してみてください。
